The Shiwan Cup Emerging Artist Ceramic Sculpture Competitionn is a renowned event in the ceramic art community, jointly organized by the China Ceramic Industry Association and Guangdong Shiwan Ceramics Museum. This competition promotes contemporary ceramic art, encouraging young creators to explore diverse innovations through ceramics. Known for its rich history and unique regional character, Shiwan ceramics serve as a cultural bridge, fostering international exchange in ceramic art. This year's theme, 'Beyond the Image: Interpreting Clay Nature and Multi-dimensional Generation', emphasizes exploring creative potential through the language of ceramics.

We were invited to handle the visual design for this year's Shiwan Cup, responsible for the overall visual planning and presentation. The design aims to capture the essence of the theme, "Beyond the Image," using modern visual elements to attract and inspire participants and audiences, deepening their understanding and appreciation of ceramic art.

The concept of 'Beyond the Image' is rooted in the idea of transcending physical form, especially the limitations of perception, moving from the tangible to the abstract. The subtitle, 'Interpreting Clay Nature and Multi-dimensional Generation', speaks to creating boundless possibilities through ceramics.

With this core idea, our design is built on three concepts: 'Free Expression', 'Deconstruction of Form', and 'Infinite Meaning'. The design avoids representational shapes, using free-flowing lines and surfaces to emulate the flexibility and malleability of clay, capturing the spirit of 'Beyond the Image'.

1. Free Expression

The design elements embody spontaneity and freedom, with fluid lines illustrating the bursts of inspiration that emerge in the creative process. These lines and curves interweave organically, mirroring the unrestrained state of clay in artistic creation.

2. Deconstruction of Form

By deconstructing traditional forms, the design invites viewers to rethink the structure and shape of ceramics. The assembly and disassembly of shapes simulate the artist's reinterpretation of material and form, allowing viewers to experience the versatility of ceramics from different perspectives.

3. Infinite Meaning

The design avoids concrete imagery, instead using abstract compositions of lines and planes to suggest infinite possibilities. This structure embodies the limitless potential of ceramic art, encouraging participants to break free of conventions and return to a pure, inward creative expression.

Overall, the design is presented with a clean aesthetic and free strokes, using flowing and turning lines to create a sense of open space, resonating with the theme of 'Beyond the Image'.

The exhibition for the competition is set at the Meitao Bay · Xingguanghui Art Museum in Shiwan, Foshan. This museum, previously a ceramic factory building in the old Shiwan Industrial Park, is undergoing transformation into an art space. Although the renovation is not yet complete, we needed to organize the exhibition within this open-structured building.

Facing several design challenges, we aimed to harmonize the venue's rugged industrial style with the delicate intricacy of the ceramic artworks. We employed the following methods to achieve this goal:

1. Space Utilization: We made full use of the open structure of the factory, setting up flexible exhibition areas to ensure a seamless flow for viewers to appreciate each piece. This open design preserved the venue's raw essence while providing ample visual space for the artworks.

2. Material Contrast: To highlight the artworks' delicate nature, we chose materials that contrast sharply with the industrial style, enhancing the exhibit's texture and emphasizing the ceramic pieces' artistic beauty.

3. Lighting Design: We utilized various lighting equipment, including spotlights and soft lights, to create suitable lighting effects. Spotlights highlighted the details and textures of the artworks, while soft lights created a comfortable and harmonious atmosphere in the overall space. This lighting design made the artworks appear more vivid and added visual depth to the exhibition.

4. Dynamic Presentation: We incorporated multimedia equipment and interactive installations to provide a rich viewing experience. For example, a projection display area showcased the ceramic creation process and design concepts through dynamic videos, allowing viewers to gain a deeper understanding of the stories behind the works.

Through these design methods, we successfully harmonized the venue's ruggedness with the artworks' delicacy, creating a unique visual effect that interprets the core concept of 'Beyond The Image'. This demonstrates how innovative design language can seamlessly blend traditional art with modern aesthetics in an open-structured environment.
